My name’s Sally Coleman, AKA Nimble design. I have been riding the design industry roller-coaster for over a decade now. I set up Nimble Design, my freelance venture, nearly 5 years ago. In that time, I’ve been fortunate to work with some great Bristol-based design agencies, who’s clients include large national and international organisations. I also work directly for my own clients – a lovely, and very diverse, bunch of SMEs and charities.
For my own clients, a lot of my work focuses on branding and visual identity, rolling out the design across both print and digital media.
I often take an illustrative and playful approach to projects. I believe that good design is about improving peoples' experience of a product or service – putting the human beings who use it in the centre of the picture, and hopefully putting a smile on their face.
Whether you’re a design agency looking for some extra support in the studio, or a start-up business looking for some branding advice, please get in touch – I’m here to help!
Working with Xanthe and Zara, respective owners of Ivory Flowers and Zara’s Chocolates, has been a joy. Running a small business can be tough right now, but these smart cookies made a very savvy decision to split the lease on a shop - 228 North Street, Bedminster. Flowers and chocolates are a natural match, but they realised they would needed to revisit their branding, in order to create something which worked for both business – in tandem and independently.
"Sally was great to work with. She really took the time to understand our ideas and hopes for our new project. The idea of doing two separate logos, with their own separate design needs, whilst making them some how cohesive was quite a minefield. Sally took it on and did justice to both of our wishes whilst creating an amazing overall look for our shop."
Fair Shares is a fantastic Gloucestershire-based charity. They run time banking projects which enable people to exchange practical skills and create mutually supportive community networks. They asked me to redesign their brand, as they didn’t feel it reflected who there were and what they did. I proposed a simple logo and a ‘footer’ of overlapping objects to illustrate the idea of a chain of skills exchage. It was a big change from their existing identity, but I’m pleased to say they ran
with it and haven’t looked back!
“The Voluntary sector tends to use predictable logos and images. Sally’s ideas were certainly not that and were readily endorsed by all at Fair Shares, with a good deal of excitement. Sally’s work has certainly generated a wow factor from other colleagues in the sector and I have been more than happy to recommend her to them.”
Chris Lyons – skilled carpenter, experienced builder and old friend, was looking for a logo and some initial branding to support his independent business venture, Lyons Home Renovations. He wanted a brand that reflected his high standard of workmanship, with a blend of traditional and contemporary style... and a lion, obviously.
Mentor Digital are a web design and digital media agency, based in Bristol. They approached me with a brief to create a set of character illustrations for an animated NHS information film. Working to a storyboard, my only other design restriction was the colour palette. What can I say, this project was a joy!
“We asked Sally to produce character illustrations for an NHS animation. She quickly engaged with the project, paying close attention to our client’s requirements. She was a pleasure to work with and we were very pleased with what she produced. We have used Sally since for several other projects.”

Branding: logo design, stationery, brouchure, boat livery
Marine Conservation Research are a small, UK based team of dedicated and passionate marine scientists, working to protect marine wildlife and support conservation policy around the world. Back in 2009 they asked me to design their logo, stationery and other print materials. They felt they needed to establish a cohesive and professional image for the organisation.
Over the past five years, I’ve applied their branding to everything from boat decals and flags and a fundraising Buff (new one on me too!). Visit their website to find out more and support thier valuable work.
“When we set-up our business, we needed to develop a logo and some professional looking branding quickly. Sally came highly recommended. She immediately understood our brief and was able to deliver exactly what we needed. We continue to work with her as our organistion grows and have no hesitation in recommending her to others.”

Branding: logo design, stationery, USB drive, press ads
The lovely Ruth Garner is a Bristol-based photographer, specialising in weddings and portraiture. She has a real passion for candid, informal and fun photography, working away quietly in the background to perfectly capture each event she shoots.
She approached me back in 2010 to design her initial logo and visual identity. We’ve remained in touch ever since, developing her brand collateral to support her growing business.
“Sally is fantastic to work with. She took my vague ideas and turned them into a beautiful and completely suitable design. Her great artistic skills are balanced perfectly with her professional approach. I would wholeheartedly recommend her.”
Chrsitina Greenland is a Body & Movement Practitioner. In the process of setting up her own practise, she briefed me to design a logo and a look and feel for her branding. Initially Christina was quite hesitant about my proposed design, confronting a common feeling among first-time-branders of it looking ‘too professional’. But, she remained open-minded, allowing time for it to settle in and now feels like the owner of a brand which she is both comfortable with and proud of.
“Sally skillfully translated my thoughts and feelings into form, creating a brand that is both personal and professional. I would highly recommend her, not only for the quality of design, but also for the supportive and creative way in which she works with you to achieve your goal.”
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Laura, at House of The Rising Bun, since the birth of her business back in 2011. Laura makes amazing, all-natural cake mixes. I’ve worked with her on all aspects of her branding, from packaging and event design, to tone of voice and email campaigns.
Laura is a dream client, passionate about her business and a true advocate for design. You can buys Laura’s delicious mixes direct from her website, or, if you’re feeling fancy, pop into Harvey Nic’s food hall.
“From our very first meeting, Sally breathed life into my ideas. She totally exceeded my expectations by creating, not just a logo, but a brand. Three years in, and she has worked with me every step of the way. I really cannot recommend her highly enough. Her design and branding skills have meant I am now stocked in Harvey Nichols and other high-end retailers.”
The tremendously talented Toby Steedman is the mastermind behind Torchlight Tution - an independent tuition agency based in London. At the outset of his business venture, Toby set me a brief to create a strong visual identity which would stand the agency apart from it’s stuffy and old fashioned competitors. Toby has a great vision and a big imagination, and crucially, he understands that learning should never be boring.
“Sally is a blessing to work with. She listens to my jumbled ideas and organises them into designs that are memorable, professional and, above all, beautiful. Her input from proposal to delivery is always fresh and packed with inspiration. I cannot recommend Nimble Design more highly.”
Toby Steedman, Founder/Director
Sally Darby is an illustrator, maker and workshop facilitator. In the process of setting up her business, she approached me to design her a logo. I have to say, designing a logo for a fellow creative was a bit daunting! But Sally gave me a good steer on the sort of thing she was after and was very happy with the final design, phew!
“It was an absolute ease and pleasure working with Sally on my logo. She listened completely to what I wanted and quickly came up with a design that I loved!”
Jon Hunt is a speech therapist with many years of experience. In the process of developing a set tools and exercises to support language recovery, he realised he needed to carefully consider the overall look and feel of his product. So, he came to me with a brief to create a warm, contemporary and simple brand which would appeal to both practitioners, patients, and carers.
Stephanie & Kevin Bassett, Pearl Bay vintage VW hire
Steph and Kevin were looking for a new business venture. So they decided to buy Pearl, a vintage VW camper van, on ebay! Their plan was to hire Pearl out for weddings and events. They knew that they would need the right branding to apeal to the wedding market, but they’d never embarked on anything like this before. So, they asked me for the works: a business name, logo design, stationery, brochure and website – the dream brief!
“We have been very happy with the creative designs and ideas Sally came up with for us and felt nothing was too much trouble when we needed advice.”
The Churn Project is a small, grassroots charity based in Cirencester. They work along side local people and organisations to improve quality of life for the whole community. Back in 2011 they asked me to design them a leaflet. They liked it so much, they asked me to do the same to their website and newsletter. I’ve really enjoyed developing this identity. It’s always a pleasure to work with such lovely, dedicated people.
“We’d seen Sally’s work elsewhere and felt her style would be perfect for our charity. She intuitively knew what we were looking for and came up with a look for our website and print media which was spot on. She’s provided us with a professional branding which has helped raise our profile with our local community and with potential funders. And she’s absolutely delightful to work with!”
